Associations and Networks of People Living with HIV (PLHIV) in Malawi hold the first Joint Annual General Meeting

The Malawi Network of People Living with HIV (MANET+), National Association of People Living with HIV in Malawi (NAPAHAM), Coalition of Women Living with HIV (COWLHA), Malawi Network of Religious Leaders Living with or Personally Affected by HIV and AIDS (MANERELA+), Teachers Living Positively (T’LIPO), Health Care Workers Living with HIV (HECAWLP) and the Network of Journalists Living with HIV (JONEHA) have for the first gathered together  to hold the 2014 Annual General Meetings (AGMs). The annual general meetings will run from 10th to 12th December 2014, at the Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe.

This is the first time that all associations and networks of people living with HIV have had the opportunity of holding Annual General Meetings concurrently. According to the organising committee, members of various associations and networks will be holding their Annual General Meetings in breakaway sessions. All issues from the breakaway sessions will be discussed in the general plenary session, where concrete resolutions and recommendations will be agreed upon and endorsed.

The Acting Executive Director for National AIDS Commission (NAC), Mr Davie Kalomba, has commended the approach as being a unifying factor and cost effective. “As a one off activity, this approach is good. Instead of each association holding its own Annual General Meeting, all of them are today under one roof and this enhances unity and is a cost cutting measure at the same time. In addition, resolutions from such meetings are more binding and respected by all” said Mr Kalomba.

This is one of the major advocacy activities, which takes place every year and the National AIDS Commission (NAC) approved MK20, 432,784.00, in support of this important activity. The funds were requested by MANET+, the umbrella organisation for all associations and networks of people living with HIV in Malawi.

Mr Safari Mbewe, Executive Director for the MANET +, acknowledged and appreciated the gesture extended by NAC.”National AIDS Commission is our key partner in all that we do as associations and networks of people living with HIV in Malawi and we appreciate the support we receive from NAC. Without the financial support from NAC, the Joint Annual General Meeting wouldn’t have taken place”, acknowledged Mr Mbewe.

Over 450 delegates are participating in the Joint Annual General Meeting for people living with HIV in Malawi. The resolutions from the general meeting will be documented and shared with Government, National AIDS Commission, UNAIDS and all relevant stakeholders for reference and use.
