Let’s join hands to mobilize domestic funding towards national response to HIV and AIDS programming amidst dwindling global resources for external financing. The National AIDS Commission Chief executive officer Dr. Beatrice Matanje made the call on Tuesday 19th August 2025, during orientation of executive members of the Malawi HIV and AIDS Partnership Forum (MPF). Dr. Matanje said domestic funding is key to sustaining the remarkable gains the country has made over the years. “This calls for continued multisectoral coordination and strong partnerships among all stakeholders for an effective and sustainable response to HIV and AIDS”, said Dr. Matanje. The newly incoming MPF members, according to Dr. Matanje, have come at the right time to bring together stakeholders for productive discussion, information sharing, consensus building, joint planning, and mutual support for all players in the national response.
“You have joined the MPF at a critical time when the funding landscape for HIV and AIDS programming is changing and the call for domestic funding cannot be overemphasized. We are therefore expecting some innovations from you on how the domestic funding could be mobilized and your active support on the design and implementation of high impact and cost-effective interventions”, explains Dr. Matanje.
The NAC CEO also pointed out that the commission is expecting the MPF expertise to advise on sustainable resilient interventions that would withstand the taste of time to jealously safeguard the gains made in the national response to HIV and AIDS over the past decades. Taking her turn, the outgoing MPF co-chairperson Ms. Mara Kubweza Banda proudly stated that MPF has been vital in ensuring vibrant HIV and AIDS programming for the past years which has contributed to the achievement of the global 95:95:95 targets. The Outgoing MPF chair has therefore implored the incoming MPF committee to be strategic and devise ways to mobilize domestic funding towards HIV and AIDS programming.
. “There’s a lot of potential to generate enough resources within this country, we have banks, companies and individuals that can be able to channel resources towards integrated HIV and AIDS programming”, elaborated Kubweza Banda.
The MPF is an advisory body to the National AIDS Commission. It primarily fosters a well-coordinated national HIV and AIDS response that strives to meet national and global targets through a strengthened national and sub-national HIV and AIDS programme. It harnesses multisectoral collaboration and mutual accountability. Established in 2005, MPF also ensures that there is no wastage of resources and less duplication of efforts in planning, management and monitoring of the HIV and AIDS response, while bolstering clear leadership and coordination of the Commission.
