Malawi is participating in the 2026 United Nations High-Level Meeting on HIV and AIDS currently taking place in New York from June 22 to 23 2026. During the conference, world leaders, policymakers and partners are expected to adopt a new Political Declaration aimed at accelerating efforts to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
Representing Malawi at the high-level meeting are Minister of Health and Sanitation Honourable Madalitso Baloyi MP, Principal Secretary (Administration) in the ministry of Finance Mr. Patrick Liphava, National AIDS Commission Chief Executive Officer Dr. Beatrice Matanje, Deputy Director of Europe in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ms. Quent Kalichero, and Chief Disease Control Officer in the Ministry of Health Mr. Washington Ozituosauka.
Malawi’s participation follows a national consultative meeting held in Lilongwe in May, where government officials, development partners, civil society organizations and UN agencies gathered to shape the country’s input into the global meeting. Discussions at the consultation focused on leaving no one behind in the HIV response, sustainable financing, support for key and vulnerable populations, and strengthening the integration of HIV services within universal health coverage and pandemic preparedness.
The New York meeting comes at a critical time for the global HIV response, amid concerns over declining development assistance, disruptions in HIV prevention and treatment services, and growing pressure on human rights and community-led approaches. The meeting will review progress made since the 2021 Political Declaration and is expected to set new commitments and targets for 2030.
