NATIONAL AIDS COMMISSION JOINS THE WORLD IN OBSERVING THE 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GENDER BASED VIOLENCE

National AIDS Commission Chief Executive Officer Dr. Beatrice Matanje.

As Malawi joins the global community in commemorating the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, National AIDS Commission NAC stand united to say no to any form of violence against women and girls including digital violence.

This year, we unite to end Digital Violence against All Women and Girls. Digital violence includes cyberbullying and online harassment, among others. Cyberbullying and online harassment are increasingly used to shame, intimidate, and silence women and girls. For individuals living with or affected by HIV, cyberbullying can escalate stigma, discrimination, and psychological harm, pushing people away from essential prevention, treatment, and support services. NAC Chief Executive Officer Dr. Beatrice Matanje states that the commission recognizes that gender-based violence and HIV are interconnected. GBV increases the risk of HIV infection, and living with HIV can expose individuals to further violence, especially in digital spaces where harmful messages spread quickly and widely.

I call on all of us women, men, and young people to create safe and respectful online and offline environments. Let us reject cyberbullying, challenge stigma, and protect the dignity and rights of every person”, pleads Dr. Matanje.

The 2025 global theme is “UNiTE to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls.” In Malawi, the 16 Days of Activism against Gener based Violence is observed under the theme “Unite to End Digital Gender-Based Violence in Malawi.”
