NUHA CEESAY – OUTGOING UNAIDS MALAWI COUNTRY DIRECTOR BIDS FAREWELL TO STAKEHOLDERS IN THE HIV AND AIDS RESPONSE

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS) Malawi Country Director, Nuha Ceesay is leaving Malawi for Eswatini after five years of successful mission in the country. Mr. Ceesay arrived and started his tour of duty in September 2019.

He has been hailed by Stakeholders in the fight against HIV and AIDS for his tireless contribution and efforts in the fight against HIV and AIDS.

Among notable contributions during his tenure of office which includes supporting Malawi’s remarkable progress in attainment of the 95:95:95 treatment targets, is supporting Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in the implementation of community led monitoring in HIV and AIDS services, encouraging networking and collaboration among all CSOs in the HIV and AIDS response among others.

Mr. Ceesay was instrumental in the development and aligning national HIV policy documents with international standards. He played critical advocacy role in ensuring enhancement of human rights aspects of key and vulnerable populations in ensuring equitable access to  HIV and AIDS services.

Different organizations were present during this farewell function, these include National AIDS Commission (NAC), Malawi Network of AIDS Services Organization (MANASO), U.S. Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) among others.

NAC Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dr. Beatrice Matanje has applauded the outgoing UNAIDS Country Director for ably facilitating the UN system response to HIV and AIDS in the country. She further said that Malawi is so grateful for Mr Ceesay’s significant  efforts to ensure that Malawi is not missed on global and regional initiatives.

The NAC CEO supported by Mrs. Chimwemwe Mablekisi,  Director of Programs and Miss Tione Chilambe,  Head of Coordination and Capacity Building  presented an honorary certificate of recognition to the outgoing UNAIDS country director for the critical role that he played in the national response to HIV and AIDS in Malawi.

The farewell function took place at MANASO offices in Lilongwe’s Low-density Area 47 on 16th July 2024.
